There are all sorts of approaches to fixing back pain but often
lifestyle changes are what is needed, especially more exercise
and less sitting down and eating.
Don't overlook psychosomatic possibilities either, sometimes emotions are the main cause.

Changes in lifestyle and food over the past fifty years have created an explosion of obesity, and it is now a major health
crisis and not only in the Western world.

Back Pain in Alternative Health
Back pain is a huge problem for a great many people but is often one of the weak areas in orthodox medicine generally.
Of course it depends what is causing the back pain, but in most cases it is things like stress, inactivity, obesity and lifestyle generally. Kidney problems can also be involved sometimes.
There are a few things you can do that should help and I will briefly talk about some of them now.
Sarah Key
There is a very clever physiotherapist lady called Sarah Key who has clinics in London and Sydney and who has developed common sense ways of relieving chronic back pain that often nobody else has been able to fix.
Sarah Key has written excellent books on back problems, for example the Back Sufferers Bible which is well illustrated. One of her websites is http://www.sarahkey.com/
Alexander Technique
Another approach could be the famous Alexander Technique which can help you to adjust unconscious ways of holding the body which may be causing your back pain (and other pains). Try to find an experienced practitioner if possible.
Bowen Technique
Another useful approach is the Bowen Technique which may well be the answer to your back problem. Try to find an experienced practitioner who has seen these problems many times before.
Debbie Shapiro (psychosomatic approach)
Debbie has several books on the psychological aspects of disease (psychosomatic approaches) and it is well worth looking at her books to get a different take on any health problem. The psychosomatic outlook is usually the first thing we all throw out of the window when we have a problem, but it is often the core of the whole syndrome.
Taoist internal exercises
These simple exercises are often extremely successful at fixing diseases. The best books I know on it are by Dr. Stephen T Chang including his book The Complete System of Self Healing. There are at least two or three exercises which help back pain and public libraries sometimes have the book or if you need to buy it look around on the Book Depository or other discount book websites.
Chinese medicine
If kidney or other problems are the cause of the back pain then Chinese medicine should help. Unfortunately in the west it is often hard to know who is really properly trained.
If there is a Tong Ren Tang company clinic nearby then I suggest trying them, as their doctors are generally highly trained genuine specialists with extensive hospital experience in China.
Yoga
Yoga could be the answer but try to find a common sense teacher who has real remedial experience, and not just someone mechanically going through a set pattern of exercises like a robot.
Mudras
There are lots of techniques that may help your back, one is the back mudra which is a bit unusual amongst mudras in that the right hand holds a different series of fingers to the left hand in this mudra.
There is also a joint mudra which helps joint problems and may also help the back indirectly. It also requires slightly different finger positions on each hand.
Remember follow the instructions for mudras, generally 3 times a day for between five and fifteen minutes is enough. If you feel bad when doing a particular mudra I would suggest stopping it.
Until I get round to posting my own pictures of these techniques on my websites I will just suggest you to look up the back mudra and joint mudra on the internet (or buy a book on mudras) to see exactly how to do it. See my webpage on mudras for more information.
Some suitable websites for mudras are listed below, there are of course many others
